Get your sleep...

An interesting blog post on Stephan Guyenet's Whole Health Source describes a study of sleep, weight loss, and health effects:

All participants were told to eat 10% fewer calories that usual for two weeks, however half of them were instructed to sleep for 8 and a half hours per night, and the other half were instructed to sleep for 5 and a half hours*. The actual recorded sleep times were 7:25 and 5:14, respectively.

Weight loss by calorie restriction causes a reduction of both fat and lean mass, which is what the investigators observed. Both groups lost the same amount of weight. However, 80% of the weight was lost as fat in the high-sleep group (2.4/3.0 kg lost as fat), while only 48% of it was lost as fat in the low-sleep group (1.4/2.9 kg lost as fat). Basically, the sleep-deprived group lost as much lean mass as they did fat mass, which is not good!

We can eat these for lunch and lose weight -- can you?

Here's a quick snapshot of a juicy, charcoal-grilled all-beef bacon cheese burger I made for Teri the other day. This was a killer burger, no doubt about it.

I've spoiled Teri, she can't find a better (or even nearly as good) burger anywhere around here. So it's my burgers or nothing. (Same goes for steaks.) Teri did the assembly (so she gets the credit for making such a beautiful stack).

Note that we use small buns, to help keep the refined carbs to a minimum (and we could use whole wheat buns). But that's still a hefty chunk of ground beef, sitting there between the buns.

Can you enjoy one of these as part of your weight-loss diet? No? Bummer. You don't know what you're missing! Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

"An Entirely Different Person"

I found this response to my photos on one of the forums that I frequent.

Re: Teri Before Photos

Wow.

I'm not speechless all that often, but this time words fail me. A picture
really is worth a thousand words, isn't it?

You look like an entirely different person. and about 25 years younger. Do you
often run into people who don't recognize you?

I'm re-inspired. Again.

Over the last twelve years of living in this small town, there are quite a few people that I have met over the years. My friends have been watching me take this journey, but they are still surprised how well my program is working. Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

Pictures - Current, 9.19.10

My husband and I went to a car show in the Bay Area on Saturday. He was taking pictures of the cars and motorcycles, and he was able to catch a few of me too. I feel so weird wanting pictures of me, but I regret not taking very many when I began this way of eating.

We met my brother-in-law and sister-in-law at the show and she looked slim and pretty. She told me that she is not eating anything special but she is walking and doing Pilates. I have been working on my weight for the last two and a half years and I like my exercise program too. I will admit that I am satisfied with the way that I look right now because I have not been this small in a very long time.

Since I do not know what weight I will be when I get to my goal, the scale continues to be my way of keeping records. Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

CALP and My 10 Day Cruise to Alaska

I had a wonderful cruise to Alaska with my husband, mother, and father. My sister took us to the pier in San Francisco where we loaded the boat to begin our journey. None of us had eaten anything before we left home so as soon as we unloaded our carry on bags, we went to the buffet for lunch. I had already made the decision to switch my Reward Meal from the lunch hour to dinner, so my first meal of the day was a Complementary Meal. I kept notes of the foods that I ate and have already added them to my Daily Menu and Exercise Journal.

As soon as we finished our lunch, we returned to our staterooms and found our luggage had arrived. I helped my mom unpack her suitcases and get settled into her room before I headed to mine where my husband and I did the same. Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

Back from vacation

Just a quick note to our loyal visitors... Teri and I were away on a much-needed vacation, so you may have noticed our lack of activity over the last few weeks.

We're back at work now, and Teri's going to post an entry describing her vacation experiences (we all know how difficult it is to stay 'on plan' during vacations, especially when trapped on a cruise ship, tempted by 24/7 grazing opportunities). Some of you may already know that Teri was able to stay on plan and actually lost weight during the 10-day cruise! (I gained two pounds... tsk tsk. But then, I ate a bunch of desserts I normally never touch.) Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »
