My Current Experiences With The Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program (CALP)

I have been writing a journal about my experiences with CALP and decided to put it in online "book" form. I will be writing a new chapter at least once a month and it will include my thoughts as well as my current stats.

If you are reading my blog and think this way of eating could be beneficial to you, read the book that got me started. It is called The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program and was written by Dr. Richard F. Heller and Dr. Rachael F. Heller. Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

Another Learning Experience!

Sorry for the long absence but I felt like my entire life was revolved around my diet, and I needed a break!

After wanting to reach my ideal weight and getting as close as I was, I began following the Paleo diet. I then began eating more fat thinking it would be more filling. I did well initially, but I began over eating and just like every other "diet", I began feeling deprived. The one thing about CALP is that I never felt like I was following a diet because I never felt deprived. I included the foods that I wanted which kept me satisfied each and every day.

Beginning Thanksgiving of 2013, I quit stepping on my scale and I also began eating more food than I needed. For the most part I followed the guidelines of CALP, but my carbohydrate portions were not balanced with the rest of my meals leaving me to gain some of my weight back.

When I stepped on my scale last month, I discovered that I had gained 20 lbs. The clothes that I could still fit into were way too tight and that is all it took for me to resume CALP, and CALP alone. Looking back, I allowed myself to become distracted by focusing on my weight instead of my health and derailed myself for the last time. The good news is that I have already begun losing some of the weight that I gained. I also began exercising by walking my dog a minimum of four days each week.

Sugar is still my carbohydrate of choice but with summer here I am consuming my sugar in the form of fresh fruit and nuts, which are both extremely satisfying to me. No doubt that I am a carbohydrate addict and I feel so much better following the guidelines of CALP! Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

My weight is down three quarters of a pound and I weighed 141-3/4 lbs. this morning.

I still had some decaf coffee leftover from last night so I enjoyed the two cups that were left with heavy whipping cream. Since I knew it would not be enough, I made me another pot. I don't know how many cups I drank this morning but I did add heavy whipping cream to each one.

I have been avoiding exercise this last week and I really want to get myself back into the habit so I put on my workout clothes, grabbed my Walk Away the Pounds Power Walk DVD, grabbed my two pound hand weights, and got started. I completed all three miles.

My husband smoked a chicken on the barbecue and when it was ready, I began making my salad. I did not have enough lettuce To make two salads so my husband had broccoli with his chicken. I ate my salad first since my chicken breast and wing were too hot to eat. The chicken was cooked to perfection and I enjoyed every single bite.

When it came time for dinner, I was not hungry. I still had some decaf coffee left from earlier so my husband made me the remaining one and a quarter cups and added heavy whipping cream to both of them. He placed the two empanadillas that he defrosted a couple of days ago into the toaster oven and when they were warm he offered me one. Since I am still trying to follow my hunger instead of eating because it is time, I declined.

I decided to avoid the scale since I have been eating out the last couple of days.

I did drink my decaf coffee and added heavy whipping cream to each cup.

I chose not to eat lunch since I knew I was going to be joining my mom and sister at the seafood buffet that evening.

At 4 p.m., we went to the buffet and had dinner. As soon as we finished, I helped my sister get everything loaded into the car and they headed home.

I walked back into the casino to get me a bottle of water and then I returned home.

I woke up at the hotel with my mom and sister so I did not have access to my scale to weigh myself. After going downstairs to get the two of them a cinnamon roll, I returned home.

It was my mom's birthday so I knew I was going to return but I wanted to get myself cleaned up first. My husband made me a pot of decaf coffee and I added heavy whipping cream to each cup.

Before I left home, my husband made us each a pork chop. I did not want to spend anymore time so I did not bother making me a vegetable.

After returning to the casino my mom and sister got in my car and we went to Walmart. Since I had already had lunch and they had not, I dropped them off at a restaurant. I went to the feed store to get some chicken and rabbit feed and when I returned to pick them up, it was 3 p.m., and they were just finishing their lunch.

That evening, I was hungry. Since neither one of them were hungry or wanted to eat, my sister joined me at the buffet while I had dinner.

Our evening finished earlier than the night before so I went home to sleep in my own bed.

My weight dropped a quarter of a pound and I weighed 137-3/4 lbs. this morning. I am surprised it dropped at all since the turkey breast I ate for lunch yesterday was rather salty, but I'll take it.

I drank another pot of decaf coffee this morning. I drank four cups with heavy whipping cream and even though it tastes good, I really need to stop drinking so much since it is affecting my hot sweats in a negative way.

I was hungry when it came time for lunch and while my husband was making the steak with peppercorn sauce, I made us each a salad. Our salads included romaine lettuce, celery, cheddar cheese, and our homemade vinaigrette dressing. I still had some leftover mushrooms so my husband warmed them up for me. I began eating my salad and when I finished, I began eating my steak with peppercorn sauce and mushrooms. My meal was delicious and I am very proud to say that I only ate about half of my steak and I put the remainder in the refrigerator for another meal.

When it came time for dinner my husband warmed up my leftover New York steak with peppercorn sauce. I discovered it was bigger than I thought, but I ate it all. He offered to make me a small bowl of broccoli but I was full so I did not want any.

My weight is the same as it was yesterday and the day before, 138 lbs.

I enjoyed an entire pot of decaf coffee this morning and I added heavy whipping cream to all four cups.

My husband took a turkey breast out of our freezer the other day and defrosted it in our refrigerator. Since it was defrosted today, he seasoned it salt, pepper, garlic, paprika, and rosemary and put it into the oven for our lunch.

Since I am trying to make a habit of getting my exercises done, I took out my WATP Power Walk DVD and completed all three miles with my two pound hand weights. After cooling down, I tried to get an internet connection so I could update my blog, but it was still unavailable.

The turkey breast was almost ready so I made two salads with romaine lettuce, celery, cheddar cheese, some homegrown tomato, and our homemade vinaigrette dressing. My husband made himself some mashed potatoes and when the turkey was ready, he made some gravy. I like potatoes, but my preference is to eat them as french fries or fried potatoes, so I did not want any. My meal was simple, salad and a few slices of turkey breast.

When it came time for dinner, I was not hungry. My husband defrosted a couple of New York steaks earlier and I knew that if he made them, I would begin eating and then I would eat more than I needed since I really do love steak. His plan was to make steak with peppercorn sauce so he will be making them tomorrow for our lunch. He made himself a turkey sandwich with the leftover turkey so instead of me going without anything, I made me three stalks of celery and I stuffed them with cream cheese.

My weight is the same as it was yesterday, 138 lbs.

It is going to take me awhile to get used to the time change. I forced myself to stay in bed as long as I could and it was 5 a.m. when I finally gave up on trying to sleep. I ended up drinking four cups of decaf coffee and I added heavy whipping cream to each one of them.

My daughter's dog, Wasser, found his way outside of our fence again and when I called him I saw him trying to squeeze back under the fence to come back home. As I walked to get my shoes, I didn't see him crawl back under so I took my dog and my son's dog and we walked the fence line calling him the entire time.

I live on sixteen acres and our fence line surrounds the perimeter of our property. During my walk, I blocked the areas where he could crawl under, thanks to my dog Theo. Since Wasser is such a big guy, Anatolian Shephard/Great Pyrenees, he is an opportunist and not a digger. While walking the fence line I saw three or four different areas where the trees were growing and sitting on top of our fences. When I returned to the house, Wasser was laying in the breezeway looking guilty. I ignored him instead of petting him and walked into the house to inform my husband about the trees. I asked him if he would take the chainsaw and get the trees off of our fences and he asked me if I would join him. The two of us, along with all three dogs, walked the perimeter and my husband got all the trees off of our fences.

Since we live at the bottom of a hill, walking our property line means walking up and down a steep hill. The first time I walked the perimeter I started from the direction that is a little easier to walk since it was the last place I saw Wasser. The second time I walked the perimeter with my husband, we walked the opposite direction which is much steeper than the other way. I became winded while walking uphill but I continued on, getting my share of exercise today. Click here to continue reading, or leave a comment »

My weight is up a half of a pound and I saw 138 lbs. on my scale this morning. It may be because I weighed myself earlier than I usually do, or it could be because of the amount of New York steak I ate last night. It really doesn't matter because I am used to my weight going up and down, I just don't like it when it pops up.
.
I can't believe how many days it has been since I have had a stable internet connection. Apparently, I am a slave to the internet because I definitely miss it when it is not available. The worst part is that my husband is dependent on it because it is necessary for him to get work done.

I was able to get a connection long enough to update all of my menus. I did not have it long enough to comment on a post, but I will as soon as I can. I am also going to start a November exercise challenge since I plan on getting back into the habit of exercising.

Speaking of exercising, I was able to get another Walk Away the Pounds workout done today. Instead of doing the same one as I did on Thursday, I grabbed my Walk Away Your Waistline DVD and strapped on my walk belt. My calves were still sore from the other day but I completed all three miles.

My husband ate the last of the Bombay chicken and I was going to have an omelet but the time got away from me. When I got a chance to make me something for lunch I decided to make me a large salad with two slices of chopped bacon, two stalks of celery, some cheddar cheese, and three tablespoons of our homemade vinaigrette dressing. November, 2013 - CALP Low Carb Journal

This will be my daily journal for the month of November.

My weight was 137-1/2 lbs. today. Needless to say, I was pleased with my results since I lost one whole pound since last month.

I am still following CALP, except I do drink more than one cup of decaf coffee with heavy whipping cream each morning. The guidelines of CALP allows one cup of coffee with cream within fifteen minutes, but I do exceed that each and every day. I am still following a high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate diet under the guidelines of CALP except I don't always want or need carbohydrates with my Reward Meals (RM) besides vegetables.

I am still eating a gluten free diet most of the time and the only time I do eat wheat/gluten is when I have flour tortillas as a part of my RMs. The only time I eat wheat/gluten is when I have taco salads or our homemade empanadillas, but I don't have either one of them very often. Avoiding sugar continues to remain easy for me and I am still not missing it at all. I will continue to love the freedom of CALP and eat what I want since the guidelines allow me to choose anything I want as part of my RM each day.

Began CALP on 3/03/08
Began Exercising 4/14/08, spotty but working on getting back into the habit .
