June, 2013 - CALP Low Carb Journal

This will be my daily journal for the month of June. I will be turning 54 years old in a few days and this is my sixth year of following CALP. Over the years I lost an incredible amount of weight by following this simple program. I look like a normal person who can control their weight and I like my results.

It was so easy, all I had to do was to balance my plate and I was seeing results. I believe I may have been a bit loose with my portions over the years so I am going back to basics. I am going to fix my plate by adding the same amount of protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates before I begin eating. For some reason, I believe that seeing everything on my plate will leave me with a mental image of eating enough because I will be finishing everything on my plate.

I am still following a wheat and gluten free lifestyle. My weight is up because I went off my program a couple more times but now I feel as if I am back to my comfort zone.

No more cream in my coffee. I am now drinking black decaf coffee each morning and I am finally enjoying the taste. Cream was a great transition to drinking coffee again but I went a little crazy with the sweet taste of it enjoying it throughout the day. That is a habit I will not pick up again because I am happier with the delicious, nutritious, taste of food.

Early observations

This morning as we prepare to head out again on the family reunion trail, I stepped on the scales and was rewarded with the sight of 176.2. Nothing to be proud of, but so very much better than the 180.6.

I don’t have a full week of daily weights yet, but I averaged what I have:

5 days prior to June 7: 180.3#
5 days since June 16: 178.0#

Some random observations on the 5:2 plan:

Counting calories on the “fasting” days has led me to experiment with some food choices I normally wouldn’t consider. Example: fat free half and half; conclusion: not worth the calorie savings. Heavy cream; way too many calories for the amount. Very low fat hot dogs: not as gruesome as I feared, but I won’t be buying them again. Only hunger and a generous dollop of mustard made these go down.

I can’t really afford a 2nd mug of coffee with half and half. Basically what the Hellers said.

Celery is great stuff. Crunchy and essentially calorie free.

I noticed my lunch on Monday [diet day] was a perfect little CM. Green beans, salad, 2tbsp dressing, ½ can tuna.

I’ve started drinking a full glass of water before any coffee in the mornings. Something I began to help with ‘fasting’ days but I like it so well, I’ve continued it on ‘feasting days.’ Drinking the last of my ½ litre even as I type this.

Although I do have some hunger sensations on the fasting days, I continue to notice an increased sense of alertness and wellbeing.

I am encouraged.

About me

I'm Teri and I am 54 years old. I have been fighting my weight since I was fourteen, dieting my way all the way up to 236 lbs. I started my weight loss program on March 3, 2008, and at that time I was unable to get into the largest pair of jeans I owned, size 18W. I have lost close to 100 pounds, and I now wear a size 4 jeans. My diet and exercise program have me feeling better than I could have ever imagined and I did it without starving or depriving myself in any way.

I am getting myself into better shape and my goal of becoming fit and healthy is getting closer every day.
