Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program (CALP)

The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program (CALP) was created by Drs. Richard & Rachael Heller as a way to help people overcome 'carbohydrate addiction'. It differs from Atkins-style low-carb dieting because the diet allows controlled carbohydrate portions and balanced eating, and thus makes it easier to stay on the diet long-term. My weight dropped a half of a pound and I weighed 137-1/2 lbs. this morning.

I enjoyed my two cups of decaf coffee and I added heavy whipping cream to each cup. As soon as I finished my coffee, I started drinking my water.

My husband defrosted a couple of pork chops for our lunch. He seasoned them with salt and pepper and fried them in a cast iron pan of bacon grease. I had some mushrooms leftover from yesterday so he warmed them up for me to eat with my pork chop. We finished the last of the lettuce yesterday so we had some of the broccoli that was cooked the other day. When my husband cooked the broccoli the other day, he cooked the whole bag from Costco and froze what we did not eat. Once the broccoli was warm he melted some butter and poured it over the top of them. My plate was fixed with a pork chop, about an eighth of a cup of mushrooms, and I completed my meal with a small bowl of broccoli.

Dinner was leftover tri tip. My husband warmed us the rest of the tri tip that we put in the freezer a few weeks ago. We ate around our usual time since I did not get hungry until then. After finishing my portion of tri tip I was full so I did not bother to make us a vegetable.

My weight is still the same as yesterday, 138 lbs.

I began my morning with my two cups of decaf coffee and added heavy whipping cream to each cup. Because of my hot flashes, I am not having any trouble limiting my coffee to two cups and if that doesn't take care of them in the next few weeks, I will limit my decaf coffee to one cup. The only reason I know that it is the coffee that is causing my hot flashes is because I found that when I quit drinking regular coffee, they went away.

I had a chicken salad for lunch. Yesterday, my husband made a chicken recipe with chicken breasts, homegrown bell peppers, onions, homegrown tomatoes, and spices. Since this meat mixture is great in a taco, burrito, and/or salad, I made us a couple of salads. Mine included about two or three cups of lettuce, two stalks of celery, and about four slices of our homegrown cucumber. I topped my salad with about a cup of the chicken recipe and enjoyed a chicken taco salad.

I am guessing that I did not have enough protein with my earlier meal because I became hungry a bit earlier than normal. My husband had defrosted a New York steak earlier for our dinner so I requested we have our meal about a half an hour before we usually do. He started the barbecue and then seasoned our steak with salt, pepper, and garlic. While the steak was cooking, I cleaned some celery and stuffed a few small stalks with cream cheese for me. I started my meal with the celery stuffed with cream cheese and when the steak was ready, my husband cut it into two pieces and added half of it to my plate. Because I was hungry, my appetite allowed me to eat the entire half of my steak, and it was delicious.

My weight dropped an entire pound and I weigh 138 lbs. It is really nice to see my scale continue in the right direction and I will attribute that to my new way of eating. I am pleased that I was able to eat sugar on a daily basis and still lose weight throughout my CALP journey, but it really does make sense that in order to lose more weight, I could not continue to eat sugar everyday.

The last time my weight reached the 130s, I was keeping track of my calories. I have always loved the freedom of CALP because I never had to count anything, so calorie counting by measuring and weighing my food got old real fast. Just like all of my temporary diets in the past, as soon as I resumed eating the amount of food that satisfied me, my appetite increased and it did not take long for my weight to go right back to where it was before I began counting calories.

I have been successful in maintaining my weight the last two years but I still have a belly flap. CALP has been working well for me but in order to reach my ideal weight I had to make other adjustments to my diet. By following a low carbohydrate, high fat, high protein diet, I am able to follow the WHEN diet, “When Hunger Ensues Naturally.” I continue to follow the guidelines of CALP, but I have reached the point where I don't need any carbohydrates, other than the carbohydrates in my vegetables, to be happy with my meal.

I never thought I would be able to eliminate sugar from my diet, but now that I have these past few weeks, I don't miss it at all. Just like wheat, sugar is addictive to me. I know that once I start, it is all I can think about and I even have to force myself to stop eating it. Because I don't want to become addicted to it again, I will enjoy sugar on occasion but I certainly don't need to eat it on a daily basis anymore. My weight is exactly the same as yesterday, 139 lbs.

I have been suffering with my hot flashes the last couple of weeks and last night I experienced some night sweats so I am finally ready to give up one cup of my decaf coffee each day. Instead of drinking three cups of decaf coffee with cream, I limited my coffee to two cups of decaf coffee with cream this morning. Because I enjoy my coffee every morning and it does not seem to affect my weight loss, I was hoping I could continue to drink three cups each day. Now that it is affecting my sleep, I am finally ready to eliminate that third cup.

My husband and I picked up a pork roast when we were at the store the other day so we decided to have it for lunch. He seasoned it with salt and pepper and stuck it into the oven. When it was almost ready, I began making us each a salad. Mine included about two cups of romaine lettuce, a stalk and a half of celery, about four cut up slices of our homegrown cucumber, and about a tablespoon of our homemade vinaigrette dressing. The roast was ready the same time as our salads so I fixed my saucer with about four ounces of pork roast and completed my meal with my salad.

Tonight was leftovers for dinner. My husband had some leftover chicken legs and I had about a quarter of my leftover New York steak. He placed my steak and mushrooms, as well as his chicken legs, into the toaster oven to warm them up. He also steamed some fresh spinach and when it was ready he added butter and salt. My meal consisted of about four ounces of New York steak, half of the six leftover mushrooms, and a small bowl of spinach. It was delicious and even though I would have eaten more if there was any, I was definitely satisfied with the amount of food I had to eat!

My weight is 139 lbs., up a pound since yesterday. Even though I skipped dinner last night I expected my weight to pop up because of all of the carbohydrates I ate for lunch yesterday. Since I don't intend on eating anywhere near the amount of carbohydrates in my immediate future, I will see how long it will take for me to lose it again.

I enjoyed three cups of decaf coffee with heavy whipping cream. I still enjoy my coffee each morning but it is definitely getting easier for me to stop at three cups each day.

My husband defrosted a New York steak for our lunch. We purchased a slab of New York steaks a week ago and he cut it into one inch steaks. Since neither one of us wants to eat a whole steak, we have been sharing one. He started the barbecue and seasoned it with salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika. We also had a bag of broccoli from Costco so he steamed the entire bag since it does not stay fresh in the refrigerator as long as we would like. Whenever I eat steak, I like mushrooms to go along with it. My husband sliced about six of them and sauteed them in coconut oil. When everything was ready, I fixed my plate with half of the steak, half of the mushrooms, and my husband fixed me a small bowl of broccoli with butter. I enjoyed my meal and I was surprised when I still had half of my steak and some broccoli left, because I was full. I grabbed a storage container and placed the rest of my steak, broccoli, and the remaining mushrooms into it for another time.

When it came time for dinner my husband defrosted a couple of pork chops and seasoned them with salt and pepper. He cooked them in a cast iron pan of bacon grease while I made us each a salad. My salad included about two cups of romaine lettuce and a stalk and a half of celery. I made some fresh vinaigrette dressing with mustard, coconut vinegar, coconut oil, and olive oil. I drizzled some dressing onto my salad and enjoyed my pork chop along with my salad.

My weight dropped another half of a pound and I weigh 138 lbs.

I enjoyed my three cups of decaf coffee with heavy whipping cream. I am still struggling with hot flashes so I will wait until November to see if I will have to cut down to two cups each day.

My husband ordered a driver side seat belt for our truck on Monday so we got ready to go out of town to pick it up. Unfortunately, the Dodge dealer was located an hour away so our plan was to pick it up, go to lunch, and then stop at Costco before we returned home. When we got to the dealer we discovered that the part they received was the passenger side seat belt, so it was the wrong one. Luckily my husband brought the part that needed to be replaced and when he set them side by side, he noticed that it was the wrong one. The box that it came in was the right part number but the part inside was not. Since it was their error, they will be shipping the right part to our house so we won't have to go back and pick it up.

Our next stop was the taqueria for lunch. I ordered the flying saucer which is a taco salad with carne asada, beans, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, and sour cream in a fried flour tortilla shell. While waiting for my lunch I enjoyed some corn tortilla chips with pico de gallo. After my taco salad arrived I began eating but instead of eating the entire flour tortilla shell along with it, I only had a small amount.

After lunch we went to Costco to pick up some items that we needed. As anyone knows that has been to Costco, there are food samples available throughout the warehouse. Because I have been following my lifestyle for several years, I do not eat snacks so passing by all the samples never bothers me.

Because of all the carbohydrates I had eaten for lunch I expected to be hungry when it came time for dinner. To my surprise, I did not experience any hunger so I skipped dinner. Even later, when it was time for me to go to bed, I was still not hungry.

My husband defrosted a couple of pork chops for our lunch and seasoned them with salt and pepper. He fried them in a cast iron pan of bacon grease and I definitely enjoyed mine. I am out of lettuce and I didn't want to have to wait for my husband to make us some zucchini so I cleaned the last of the celery and my half included two stalks, one small and one medium.

My husband defrosted four pieces of tilapia for our dinner. He seasoned them with salt, pepper, garlic, rosemary, and paprika. He fried them in a combination of butter and coconut oil and when they were ready, he served me two small pieces. He also fried us some of our homegrown zucchini in coconut oil and when I finished my meal, I was full!

October, 2013 - CALP Low Carb Journal

This will be my daily journal for the month of October.

My weight was 138-1/2 lbs. today. Needless to say, I was pleased with my results since I am back into the 130's again.

I have made a few changes to my diet the last few weeks because I am tired of watching my weight go up and down. Since I still want to lose more weight, I have been following a high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate diet and it seems to be working. I am satisfied with my two meals each day and now that I have converted my body into a fat burner instead of a sugar burner, I am getting full on less food. The best part about this change is that I am not missing sugar at all. I never thought I would get to the point where I would not crave or want sugar, but I have!

The other thing I am doing is Intermittent Fasting. I have always been comfortable eating within an eight hour window, so that is the way I will continue to eat!

9.30.13, Low Carb Diet Journal

My weight dropped another quarter of a pound and I weigh 138-3/4 lbs. Tomorrow is the first of the month and if all goes well tomorrow morning, I will still be in the 130s.

I enjoyed all three cups of my decaf coffee with heavy whipping cream. As I mentioned previously, it is getting easier to stop at three cups since I am still experiencing hot flashes.

We had leftovers for lunch today. We still had some stuffed zucchini left from the other day so instead of sticking it in the freezer, I decided to have it for lunch. My husband had leftovers as well but he had some sausage to go along with his small piece of stuffed zucchini. Again, when I finished my meal, I was full and did not want or need anything else to eat.

The one thing I have noticed about my much smaller appetite is that I do get hungry around dinner time. Since I usually eat my lunch around noon and dinner around 6 p.m., I am well within the eight hour window of Intermittent Fasting.

We still had a half of a chicken leftover from the other day so my husband warmed it in the toaster oven. While the chicken was warming, he opened up a can of black olives and I had about four of them. Since I only eat white meat, I enjoyed the breast and wing while my husband finished off the leg and thigh. My appetite was satisfied with the chicken so I did not bother fixing any vegetables to go along with this meal.

9.29.13, Low Carb Diet Journal

My weight dropped another one half pound and I weigh 139 lbs. I am still following a high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate way of eating and to be perfectly honest, this is the way I prefer to eat. Regarding my weight, so far, so good!

I enjoyed my three cups of decaf coffee with heavy whipping cream. I almost stopped at two cups but I have accepted that I am still not there yet. At this point, I really am curious to see if I can continue to drink three cups of decaf coffee each morning and see if my hot flashes will go away.

My husband defrosted a New York steak for our lunch. He only defrosted one steak because when we bought them, he cut them about an inch thick. I made us each a salad and mine included about two cups of romaine lettuce, a stalk of celery, and some of our homemade vinaigrette dressing. The steak was seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, and paprika and while it was cooking on the barbecue he sliced about six mushrooms. They were sauteed in coconut oil and when the steak and mushrooms were both ready, he cut the steak in half and placed one half on my plate and the other half on his. I finished my salad before I began eating my steak and when I was about halfway through my steak, I stopped eating because I was full. Let me just say that this is so unlike me because I have never had any problem finishing a steak!

I was hungry when it came time for dinner. I was looking forward to my leftover steak and mushrooms for my meal since they both tasted so good earlier. I was happy with my meal but if I would have had more steak on my plate, I would have eaten more.
